consumption of music videos

Consumption of music video
Music consumption is the way within which the general public are able to take in music produced, especially within the modern era. The basic principle that surrounds all of this is: music is important to people, no matter if its any shape or form.
The way we have been able to consume music as a society has been developing and changing. From the days of the use of a classic gramophone to nowadays not being able to walk down the street without seeing a teenager with wireless iPhone headphones put into them. Here is a quick history timeline of how we have been able to consume music since the development of technology.

1877- Thomas Edison introduced the first machine that could both record music and play it back, the phonograph, which initially used a metal foil covered cylinder as the media.

1889-Pre-recorded wax cylinders hit the market, initially running at about 120 rpm, holding 2 – 3 minutes of music.
1890- Shellac flat-disc records introduced, initially 5” diameter, then 7”, 10” and 12”. At 78 rpm, the 10” records held about 3 minutes of music and the 12” records held 4 – 5 minutes of music. The 10” 78
rpm disc became an industry standard in the early 1900s.

1912-17 First amateur broadcasts of music radio at a college radio station in San Jose, CA.

1919  First commercial radio station 1XE, Medford MA, broadcast music

1927- First selective jukebox, capable of selecting and playing more than one record, introduced by Automated Musical Instrument Company, later known as AMI.

1930's- Vinyl records introduced, primarily for use by music radio stations. Shellac remained the standard media for retail record albums.

Late 1930's- First analog FM radio stations begin broadcasting, including W8HK (Buffalo, NY); W1XOJ/WGTR (Paxton, MA).

1963- Phillips introduced the compact cassette tape, which they licensed free of charge.

1979- Sony introduced the Walkman compact portable compact cassette tape player.

1980- CD format is standardized.

1981- MTV (first music channel) is launched in the U.S.

1991- MP3 introduced for digital audio files.

1993- First band to perform live on the internet.

1995- DVD and ROM introduced.

1996-1997- First portable Mp3 players are introduced.

2001- Apple introduce the iPod and iTunes, the same year that the first 3G phones are introduced.

2006- Spotify is created in Sweden.

2007- Apple introduce the iPhone and iTunes in earnest.

2009- 4G cellular phones are introduced.

2017- Norway plan to end production of the FM analog radio.

Overall, we can clearly see that with the development  of digital technology, the access to consume music has become a lot easier for the mass public. However, with this development in specified devices, the way in which we are able to consume music video will become niche once again with technological dominance of specified products. For example, the use of FM digital radio is clearly on the decline, while the use of free streaming sites such as Spotify on iPhone are on the rapid incline. As a result of this, if we were to focus on an area of consumption, we would primarily focus on the release on the internet and popular apps such as Spotify and YouTube to receive as much attention as we can to our video.

location ideas

02:37:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

For our music video idea that we have attained, we will need the use of many locations to achieve the idea that we have discussed. This means that we could be going far afield to achieve the shots that we want, costing a significant amount of money in the process. Here are some of the locations that we are considering to use:

The beach: SOUTHWOLD BEACH

This has always been considered one of our locations as we want stark contrasts between each locations. The beach has become a popular use of setting in music videos, it resembles a theme of isolation away from society, which we feel is a potent message behind the use of drugs and the consequences of its use. In addition to this, we will be having scenes of a hustle and bustle urban area and also inner countryside, thus the beach is complete change of resemblance to the other locations.

The countryside: NORFOLK

This location is once again used as another contrast between the land and the sea. The countryside once again will resemble isolation. However, we will want the countryside to resemble a contrast of happy memories for our character. This will be aimed to be completed by the weather, where we will use a contrast of sunlight weather to the grey used at the beach. The access to this type of location should be easy as we are surrounded by vast expanse of countryside in Norfolk.

The urban city: NORWICH/LONDON

This is an upcoming yet undecided location, we have the idea of using the urban city for shots, but for which city we use it is yet undecided. We wanted to use this location once again as a contrast and the opaqueness from his inclusion/exclusion from society, however it will subscribe the viewers and protagonist characters to an uncomfortable situation, thus being unique from any other location and portraying the escapism one would feel if they had been completing the drugs process.

The urban city: LONDON SKYLINE

This we feel will be used as one of our final locations. It will be the literal escapist location directly in the city. However, it will also tease with the idea of suicide and death, thus unexpectedly hinting at the final part of our linear narrative. As he is chasing his 'love', we feel like this common location within music videos will bring our protagonist character to his downfall from the use of drugs. The problem we may encounter with this location will be the access as it will be quite difficult to get transport down to London and gain access to the top of a building.

Existing settings

Existing settings

What is setting?

Setting in media is the place where something is positioned or where an event takes place. It also contains sub-settings of where the time, place and circumstances within a narrative all take place. Setting can very in a vast area, such as a field or a beach or from minimal space such as a single room/door. Props are also classed within the setting bracket. Setting is primarily used within a music video and films to establish a place alongside a based meaning throughout. For example, in many films they use a sunset to portray the ending is near in a movie.

What are the conventional settings we expect to see used in the music video sequences?

Music videos normally all have a similar aspect of setting that is linked together. Normally the music video will compromise of two or more main settings that significantly contrast each other. For example, one location would be a dark room inside, whereas the other would include bright sunlight and green fields. These all aim to reflect the emotions and act as a clue towards the character, thus allowing them to blend in with the setting. Other conventional scenes we will normally see is the contrast between an urban city lifestyle (normally lower class associated with gangs), to a higher class, more sparse setting such as a beach. Once again, the weather will be used in the setting to reflect the mood.

How much is genre an important factor in the setting?

Genre has to be to considered as an extremely important factor within the choice of settings within a music video for its suitability. For example, a dark sombre place would not suit the target audience to a cheerful indie song. As a result of this, the genre allows the setting to be fully adaptable and suitable to the specified target audience  and enables a flowing link between the song and the audience. Overall, genre would be able to narrow down not only song choice, but also the location choice that is needed in music videos as well. We will take this into significant account when making our music video based around a particular genre.

How important is setting in the construction of mise-en-scene and creating an understanding for the viewer?

As reiterated above, setting is once again crucial for the construction of mise-en-scene and for creating an understanding for the viewer/target audience. Mise-en-scene is the arrangement of performers, props on stage, lighting etc. As a result of this, setting is vastly used, examples could be: natural lighting used for a mood effect, the placement of specified props such as a chair and the use of either minimal or a vast amount of performers. As stated previously, the setting can create a mood construction for the viewer, leading to an understanding via the genre of the song once again. In addition to this, the setting can be used as a natural or manual construction for the mise en scene once again. Without the aspect of setting, no mise en scene can be constructed; promoting the causal link between video and viewer. Without these pivotal aspects, a successful music video cannot be created- even with a band performance- as no meanings and connotations cannot be established to the viewers, leaving it as merely nothing but confusion.

Existing characters

Existing Characters

How important are characters/performers in a music video?

Characters are a pivotal aspect to a music video within many ways. One way in which characters are used is as a symbol for particular messages aiming to be portrayed throughout. These can either be a long-standing message, or a temporary message/meaning that is based on a particularly sensitive area, such as politics or drugs. In addition to this, characters also play a primary role within the clarity of the  linear narrative. By having a protagonist character, it can be used as a emotional attachment for the audience, thus keeping them engaged within the music video. This allows the song to become latched onto and more memorable by the audience, thus boosting the popularity of the song. Overall, having a character alongside a linear narrative can act as an interesting engagement and microcosm for subtle meaning, alas alongside a sufficient enough song, it should produce an emotionally effective and successful music video.

Character profiles in music videos:

1. ALEX TURNER (lead singer in Arctic Monkeys and main character in Why'd you only call me when you're high):

I have chosen this character/performer as he is very similar to the idea that we have gathered so far. In the music video, Turner portrays a character infantilised by his addiction to soft drugs and the consequences of paranoia that it portrays. Turners performance within one of the most highest watched YouTube music videos is memorable as because it portrays such a sensitive subject area, the performance must be of an accurate manner and a vast amount of pressure was placed on him to make sure this scene was correct and realistic- he duly obliged. Leading to one of the most successful music videos from a worldwide band within this decade.

Do they add appeal to the narrative? How engaged with the character do the audiences get?

Without this protagonist character, there would frankly be no appeal to the music video, alongside this there would be an extremely distorted narrative portrayed to the audience, thus leading to no engagement or involvement from the viewers at all. With another crucial aspect to this video being the point of view camera angles alongside a range of second person shots, it is able to connect the audience directly into the music video. With the excellent editing techniques added on top of this, the audience can directly get a characters perspective via the protagonist, thus enhancing the fore fronted message set out by the music video to the engaged audience by the effects of drugs. It ultimately does not establish an emotional connection between character and audience to an extent; yet it still establishes an underlying connection between character an audience without the use of emotion.

2. SIMON NEIL ( lead singer in Biffy Clyro and main character in Biblical):

This performance by the lead singer in a band of our genre is in some ways not too dissimilar to the choice above. However this time as an audience watching this unique music video, you feel more obliged to establish an emotional connection between yourself and the character. The most iconic/memorable part played by this character is the double switch in emotions that link back together within the music video. effectively with two bipolar clips brought in together to one, they are both able to fit perfectly into a song video which can portray many underlying meaning throughout.

Do they add appeal to the narrative? How engaged with the audience does the character get?

Very similarly to the character above, this character adds significant appeal to the narrative as once again the music video is constructed both emotionally and chronologically around the protagonist character. Without this protagonist character, a gaping hole would be left between the engagement of the audience and the music video itself. Even though no point of view shots are used within and are mainly compromised of third person medium shots, as an audience you feel more obliged to engage with both aspects of these character's emotions, thus establishing a double  bipolar emotional attachment that many of the audience would have felt like within daily life. With these emotional attachments, you are more likely to be emotionally grasped by the music video and with the linear narrative alongside the protagonist character as it is, it creates a short film just as memorable as the song would be to the audience.

3. DAVE GROHL (lead singer of Foo Fighters and main character in walk):

This performance is once again led by the protagonist singer of the band for its linear narrative. Yet with the linear narrative again, you are entitled to feel sympathetic for the protagonist character. The most memorable aspect via these varying emotions is the change in emotions- not too dissimilar to Neil in the music video for biblical.. Thus allowing the audience to clearly relate to these emotions.

Do they add appeal to the narrative? How engaged with the audience does the character get?

These music videos all link together closely within the narrative aspect. Even though this music would be able to work without the protagonist character, the lead singer definitely plays an important role in this music video about bringing a sense of common theme to the audience. The linear narrative is very much relatable with the engagement of the character as a common dilemma everyone can be within that situation, such as the frustration of the traffic jam. This breaks the bridged barrier between the factor of a famous musician who can be fully engaging in a disguise that would be common to the audience. This runs as a common theme throughout the music videos created by the Foo Fighters.

Initial idea character/performer list and profiles

03:50:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

1. A list of Characters/ performers and profiles for each.

Main male protagonist:

Full Name: UNKNOWN
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Ethnicity: White

Appearance

Eye colour: Brown
Hair colour: Brown
Height/build: Fairly tall, average build
Clothing/Style: He will wear vintage clothing including a shirt, black trousers and brown boots.

Role

Character Function: The male protagonists function is to serve as the main character who is dumped by his girlfriend and then turns to a life of drugs. He stumbles through different worlds before eventually being killed. He is the main message behind the video; do not take drugs.

Character Objectives:

Characters Personality: As an audience we don't really know the characters true personality for the majority of the time he is immersed within a drug like state. However, we do know that he is a depressive and this is the main reason as to why he has turned to drugs.

GIRL HE CHASES:

Full Name: UNKNOWN
Gender: Female
Age: 20+
Ethnicity: White

Appearance

Eye colour: Blue
Hair colour: Blonde
Height/build: Small
Clothing/Style: She will be wearing a red dress and no shoes.

Role

Character Function: Although this character will have less screen time than the male protagonist she will serve as his objective (he tries to chase her through the different worlds). She will also eventually turn from an enigmatic character to his antagonist as she will disappear and be the wake up call to a reality that will kill him.

Character Representations: This character will be wearing red which is typically a symbol of love but also danger. This dress will represent both: Love in the sense that he seeks a vague love or someone to love him back. The fact he can never reach her proves that he is unlovable and will always be alone. Danger because she is the catalyst to his downfall and will lead him to death in the final sequence.

Characters Personality: As an audience we will never find out this characters personality, she is meant to be enigmatic, a mystery to viewers as well as the main male character. She is also not a real character meaning her personality is irrelevant to the plot line.

Extras:

Throughout the rest of the music video other extras will be filmed to give more substance to the narrative and make it a little more believable.

2. What will these characters bring to your construction?

I think the fact that we are using just two main characters will mean the audience will engage with the storyline more than if we used more characters. I believe if we introduce too many profiles into the music video the narrative may become confusing and take away from the music itself.

3. How will audiences engage with these characters?

I believe the main protagonist will be the most engaging to the audience. I think mainly because we feel sympathy towards the character  as he turns to drugs as an only escape. This is only heightened by the fact he is rejected at the beginning as well as being hit by a car later on.

The key history of music videos

06:45:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

1)Research into the key moments in the history of your chosen media area. specific texts regulations companies individuals etc...

1930 - Music started to be used in films and to make the experience of watching the film more enjoyable, this was the first sort of music videos that where seen, however are very different to the music videos that we have become used to today.

1940 - Short lips with music where showed on TV that featured jazz bands of the time, this is the first live performance style music video that  where shown and are partially the inspiration for both music videos and adverts we see today.

1965 - The beetles began releasing promotional music videos before the latest releases to help promote sales of the album. This is an early example of using extra footage to increase profit making the industry about more than just the music and performance.

1974 - MTV was released, the first time a channel dedicated to just music videos was shown on television and at the time was the only way that people viewed music videos, this channel shaped a generation and opened peoples eyes to more and new genres of music.

1983 - One of the earliest Narrative music videos Michael Jackson released the thriller music video one of the longest music videos that had ever been made at the time was incredibly popular and still is today as it showed both the artist and a narrative to go along with it.

2005 - Technology improved and thanks to the internet sites such and youtube and iTunes where released making it easy and free to watch music videos from nearly anywhere and are one of the most common ways that music videos are watched today.

Footage

06:26:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

1) how are you planning to divide up the footage live performance, narrative or both?
For our music video we are planning to have it entirely narrative, this is because the song we have chosen is strongly about the lyrics and so it would work a lot better if we have a good narrative. Also since lip singing is difficult to get correct and match up well so the final product would look better without it.

2) what are the pros and cons of both?

Narrative
+ The story has a deeper meaning to it and also makes it easier to convey the story of the song.
+ It can be more interesting to watch
+ Draws more attention to the song than the performer themselves
-  Doesn't focus on the band much
-  If the song doesn't have  a big meaning then it will be hard to create
-  Can cost more to produce

Live Performance
+ You can showcase the band more
+ It is cheaper to produce
+ Theres less chance of people not understanding your message
- It can be boring to watch
- It draws attention away from the song itself
- If the band don't play correctly or its lined up wrong the song won't look right with the video

evaluation of preliminary (Preliminary Task)

04:43:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

1. What technology did you use in the filming and editing of your preliminary task?

Whilst filming we strictly used a canon hand-held camera. We used this particular camera because it was lightweight and meant we could easily transport it from Wymondham to Norwich. We could also mount a tripod onto the base of the camera which was extremely useful and meant we could create much more stable and level shots throughout the video. Although this camera was satisfactory its camera quality wasn't HD (only 720p) so we could not really capture the professional feel that we intend to for our main video. For the editing side of the preliminary we used adobe premiere pro on a MacBook. We decided against editing on school computers as to avoid any potential problems but also the MacBook we used was far quicker and meant we could create a much better look with more editing techniques without any lagging.

2. What have you learnt from the ideas process, casting, script writing, filming and editing of your preliminary task?

Something that we have learnt from these tasks is that we should have really planned out every step before actually starting the film work. I think we should have finalised every idea and shot which would have most likely improved the quality of the preliminary video. I also believe the task was made much harder given the fact that we had no idea what music or setting we would be given. In addition, we were only given around 2 weeks to completely finish the product which will be considerably more for our final A2 piece. Although, I think working in a group was far easier which is definitely something I would like to carry through to our final piece - working with between 3 and 4 people.

3. How did the group dynamics work?

In terms of the groups roles: I was mainly in control of editing as well as helping with filming and making sure we hit certain deadlines. Drew was able to drive which was of a great help to us in getting to Norwich early in the morning. Drew was also helped with filming, thinking of different shots and how each scene would be composed. Finally Emma and Sophia were in charge of creating the album artwork as well as blog posts and arranging days for filming.

4. Audience feedback to preliminary task?

After asking a range of people about the preliminary we have the following responses:
Rachael Hustler- Its good but the music video does not reflect the rhythmical peaks in the song. However, lots of interesting editing techniques have been employed which make the video look  professional and a little different.
Charlie Fraser: I really like the outcome of this preliminary. The use of pull focus definitely works and adds a definite focal value for the audience. In addition, the use of screen overlays and effects make the overall feel of the music video look energetic and happy. From this to the clothing where both the boy and girl wearing similar clothing really works and has been carefully thought about.

5. Looking at your finished video and its audience feedback, what changes will you be looking to make in the planning, filming and editing when it comes to your main task?

From our feedback I think we should definitely really think about the choice of music, the genre as well as tempo. We must think about this in conjunction with the scenes, thinking about the composition as a piece of art as well as a promotion of the music track.

Song choice

04:36:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

1. How important is song choice?

Image result for london grammar
Our song choice: London Grammar-wasting my young years

Song choice is extremely important for a music video as it is the song that really dictates what goes on in the video. From the rhythm and beat of the song to the genre of music, the filmmaking must follow accordingly otherwise it may look out of place and not really fit. This is definitely something we really need to think about when editing as this is where the video is attached to the song itself. Here I must think about timings and where certain cuts are placed to ensure they fit with the beat of the song. For example, when the music reaches a slower tempo then perhaps a slow motion effect could be employed? Or when the tempo speeds the editing could get very choppy and change extremely quickly very much like the editing techniques exhibited by ... in Shaun of the dead.

2. What genre of music are you thinking of using?

We have decided to use an alternative/indie style of genre. We feel that the quite slow pace and serious, melancholic feel of the song really resonates with our idea. Overall, the plot line is quite dark just like the song. In terms of lyrics, the chorus reads "wasting my young years" which is essentially what happens to our lead character who turns to drugs to overcome his sadness, in turn "wasting" his "young years". I also feel the alternative vibe from the song is very different from most music nowadays which I think will immediately create a unique feel to the video.

3. What genre of filmmaking do you think will fit with this genre of music?

Spike Jonze as well as Edgar Wright are the two main film directors that I aspire to. I really like their use of camera work and I think it would really work with the style of music video we are after. Jonze's work often create this melancholic, sad tone which is something that is a necessity in our music video.

initial plot synopsis

04:34:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

Initial Plot Synopsis:

1. What is your initial idea?

Essentially our plot follows a main male protagonist as he stumbles through various worlds and locations after turning to a life of drugs and complete melancholy. The overall feel of the narrative will be dark and really make the audience think about whats happening. I think collectively as a group we wanted to follow this idea because we thought it would be most engaging and would also allow us to experiment with a range of style and filming techniques. Typically, sad music videos tend to keep with very slow paced tempo. We would like to adopt this technique into our final video but also introduce some cutting shots exhibited by Edgar Wright in Shaun of the Dead. However, the overall filming style should reflect that of Spike Jonze whose filming techniques tend to follow one person in a deep and focused narrative.
The main plot revolves around this man who at the beginning is seen being fired from his job or ending a relationship. It is at this point that the man dreams and as he dreams he envisions a girl. he can never quite see this girl but she wears a red dress and is clearly seen running away. After the dream  he turns to drugs and this is where the music will cut in. A smoke like effect will be used to cover the screen entirely to mirror the effect of smoke from the drugs. We follow the man who now enters the first world (which is the forest scene). In this world will stumble through the forest and pass people dressed in completely strange and tribal clothing. As he walks he imagines more vividly and creatively falling through areas of the forest to completely strange and bizarre happenings. He will then move onto a city scene before finally ending in a beach scene. In each world he is chasing this girl and can never quite catch her. However, it is at the beach scene that he is finally able to see this girl. She turns to reach out to him and whilst he is about to touch her himself she disappears completely. This is where the front headlights of a car will be seen and a faint revving of a car engine will be played over the music. We will hear a wheel screech and the man will be run over. The car is essentially a symbol for the harsh reality of this mans life. Whilst the girl is a microcosm of the drugs as she is ultimately all but a fantasy and escape for the man. The girl will also be wearing red which is typically a symbol for danger something that is certainly a foreshadow to his death. When she disappears he is seemingly exiting the drug like state becoming closer to reality which is the car itself. We could argue that the man can never return from his drug infested mind and is clearly lost within himself meaning death is the only solution for the critical finale of our narrative. After he is hit we will be greeted with a completely black screen and the sound of a horn beeping. I think the video will also contain a message and spread awareness of the danger of drugs and why people should not consume them.

2. How did you come to this idea?

I had originally come up with the idea after watching an Ikea advert where a man goes through different objects into different rooms and places of a house. I liked the fluidity of the film and how in each room something different was happening. So I started to think of how I could incorporate this into my own storyline. Matt argued that we should have a theme of depression and love within the narrative to keep it more believable and engaging. From here we used a storyline sheet and started to plot down basic ideas and concepts as well as group discussions in class with all team members. Also it was fairly difficult to think of the idea completely before we had arranged the song choice as we came up with a lot of the ideas after hearing the song and the lyrics.

3. What part of the idea are you particularly keen on?

I think it will be really interesting the final scene. This scene should have the most screen time and be the central focus and climax to the music video. We will have to film early in the morning to achieve a whiter, lighter light and give the impression that he is in another dimension or world. I also think it will be interesting to see how I edit the girl disappearing as he touches her. Apart from this I think every scene should really be composed and though about to achieve a consistency engaging and intriguing look.

Plot idea in relation to our song: London Grammar, Wasting my young years

Our music choice fits our storyline very well. In fact the lyrics of the song read: "I'm wasting my young years", "It doesn't matter, I'm chasing more ideas". This is perfect when considering the man is wasting his years and ultimately wasting his life on drugs. He is unable to escape a deep depression and feeling of utter sadness so drugs are the only escape for him. Perhaps the reason behind the girl is that he strives to find love again in some form or another. He is quite clearly prepared to suffer the consequences and it "doesn't matter" if he chases his "ideas" which are essentially his drug plagued mind. In the closing stanza of the songs lyrics it reads "Don't leave me hanging on". It is here that the man is unable to contemplate the reality of his situation and is saddened by the fact that the girl has gone and he is left with nothing, trying to hang on to something that is not actually there; a fantasy.

Lyrics:
You cross this line
Do you find it hard to say it with me tonight?
I've walked these miles but I've walked in straight line
You'll never know what was there to be
Fine
I'm wasting my young years
It doesn't matter here
I'm chasing more ideas
It doesn't matter here
Baby
We are
We are
Maybe I'm wasting my young years
Baby
We are
We are
Baby, I'm wasting my young years
Don't you know that it's all I feel?
I wouldn't worry, you have all your love
I've heard it takes some time to get it behind
I'm wasting my young years
It doesn't matter here
I'm chasing more ideas
It doesn't matter here
Baby
We are
We are
Maybe I'm wasting my young years
Baby
We are
We are
Baby, I'm wasting my young years
I don't know what you want
Don't leave me hanging on
Don't know what you want
Don't leave me hanging on

Existing Narrative

01:19:00 Drew Anderson 0 Comments

1)What is a narrative

A narrative is a story that flows through the whole story linking the start to the end.

2) how does narrative work in relation to music videos

The narrative of a music video is very similar to that of any other type of film or play, it has a beginning middle ad end and flows through the whole song. The main difference in the narrative of a music video compared to a film for example is that it doesn't need a strong narrative or any narrative at all and it can still be very effective. The narrative of a music video allows for a bit more creative freedom visually compared to films as we can see in the music videos of bands such as Ok Go which have no narrative but visually are amazing to watch.

3) what are the conventions of the narrative in:

Comedy:

The conventions for a comedy music video as the genre suggests are very jokey and comedic, they don't need to reflect the song as it can be upsetting or sad but still have a funny video which brings about an ironic twist to watching the video, they often see the band or characters doing strange or weird things.

Horror:

The convention of horror music video is normally to scare the audience, for this to work it normally has to reflect the song which haws to itself be fitting to creating the scary feel to the video. Horror music videos normally fit into the pop or rock genre as this music is normally best fitting for scary music videos.

Drama:

Dramatic music videos can be quite moving and often feature things like loss or someone going through a tough time. They feature a lot of dark colours and can often show violence. With this genre of music video it is very important that the song isn't a very happy and upbeat one as if not the video wouldn't fit in with the song.

Romance:

Romance music videos are normally aimed at coupes and women and are nearly always pop songs, this is because they upbeat and fit in with the romantic genre. The romance genre are normally song performed by women also and consist quite often of the singer being in the video as apart of it.

Family:

Family music videos are often happy upbeat and don't tend to have a lot of swearing or inappropriate things on them this is because the video is also for children. However these videos have to be appealing for both children and adults, this  means that the videos often show things like dancing or people in strange locations.

4) how do these narrative theory fit into music videos?

Propp:
" Propp suggested that every narrative has eight different character types, these character types are: The villain — fights the hero in some way. The dispatcher — character who makes the villain’s evil known and sends the hero off. The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest. The princess or prize — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. The heroes journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain and resulting in a “happily ever after” moment. Her father — gives the task to the hero."

This theory shows the basic narrative of a lot of music videos and works very well with the genre of drama or horror for example in the thriller music video Michael jackson would be the hero and the girl the princess, this tear can be used to help give some structure to the narrative of the video. This theory can also fit into comedy music videos with the band playing all these roles.

Todorov:
"Tzvetan Todorov's narrative theory suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored."

This theory fits into music videos in a similar way that props does it gives balance to the narrative and adds to the hero style of narrative , with this theory the band can also be a big part of it for example it likely that these disruptions in the equilibrium would be happening to the band.

Barthes:
"Barthes theory suggests that all narratives will have one or more of the 5 codes of narrative that he created, these codes are Enigma code, Action code, Semantic code, Symbolic code and referential code"

This theory is the most basic of all narratives not just music videos ,specifically to music videos these make the narrative interesting to watch, for example the enigma code makes you want to find out more. The enigma code can work in music videos that bands make to extend over 3 or 4 songs. A lot of bands make music videos where the story link together and form one big short film of sorts.

Levi-Strauss:
"Levi Strauss theory is that the conflict is based around the binary opposites and that the binary opposites are the central climax of a narrative structure."

This theory can be difficult to fit into a lot of music videos because it requires some conflict to be within the video which doesn't always happen, this theory can certainly be applied however to come and drama music videos where it ould show a hero fighting a villain for example. This theory can also help to make the narrative interesting to watch.

Research into A2 music videos

STUCK- CANOPY A2 MEDIA FULL MARKS

This music video uses both a narrative and a lip synced performance with an even varied amount respectively. However, I personally feel that there is not a clear enough linear narrative alongside this lip synced performance and for our video, we want to establish a clear narrative. A clear linear narrative establishes a fluency of emotion alongside the song for the audience. One thing that is not established to well either is the key character or any dialogue at all throughout. The dialogue isn't a key aspect at all within a music video as it may take away the importance of the songs lyrics from the narrative. We see many characters have evenly spaced cameos with a distinct nature between  who are perceived as good/evil, however we will not be taking this idea into consideration with our initial idea as we want to establish a clear character with an undercover meaning to the song. Their best aspect is the use of many locations in their music video, these are used well to clarify the narrative with scenes of violence and chaos, but also to establish the class of society/age concepts of media to a specified target audience. The idea of a varied use of locations is a key aspect that we will take into account for our music video. In this, there is little use of credits, apart from simple yet stylish ones before the video begins.

WINGS BY BIRDY A2 MEDIA

Once again, this music video uses a mixture of both lip sync and a clear linear narrative. For an A2 music video, this one impressed me the most throughout my research. Once again, there is no domination between the lip sync or the linear narrative but it is equalled out to a perfect extent. The key character of the little girl is clearly earmarked out in the music video, thus allowing the audience to engage fully within an emotional song to have an effect. It is also allows the clearest narrative to be set out throughout too. With the key character and the lesser characters, there are no dialogue at all. This fits rightly within the music video as it does not allow a distraction from the emotional vibe the video aims to portray, alongside this there are no credits either, which may be suitable in the circumstances. There are three locations used between the contrasting singer performance and the narrative, however they all link to each other within both themes of nature and isolation as well as the sombre mood the music video aims to portray. The tempo of this video has also similarly changed in contrast to the one previously. By using the editorial technique of slow motion to an extent, it allows the footage to fit into the tempo of the song, thus having a significant emotional effect on the viewers. Overall this is probably the best music video.
WAKE UP A2 MEDIA STUDIES

This video differs to the rest we researched as it does not contain an live performance by a band but contains a full linear narrative motion throughout. This one also contains more credits than the other music videos do, however these fit in extremely well at the start with the modern design and tempo set by the music itself. As a result of just a complete linear narrative, there is no lip syncing used at all. The best part about this music video though is the factor of just one character used throughout. This allows the narrative to be produced clearly through the notion of a point of view (this is also completed really well by his camera shots and angles too) to gain the attachment of escapism that I predict is wanted to be produced by the director. As a result of this, there is no dialogue once again, which runs as a common theme throughout many music videos. There are two overarching locations used of two separate countries, which hasn't been used in any other a2 music videos before, however the sub locations used in each are able to link the music video together fluently for the audience watching. Overall this is once again another high quality music video.
