evaluation of preliminary (Preliminary Task)
1. What technology did you use in the filming and editing of your preliminary task?Whilst filming we strictly used a canon hand-held camera. We used this particular camera because it was lightweight and meant we could easily transport it from Wymondham to Norwich. We could also mount a tripod onto the base of the camera which was extremely useful and meant we could create much more stable and level shots throughout the video. Although this camera was satisfactory its camera quality wasn't HD (only 720p) so we could not really capture the professional feel that we intend to for our main video. For the editing side of the preliminary we used adobe premiere pro on a MacBook. We decided against editing on school computers as to avoid any potential problems but also the MacBook we used was far quicker and meant we could create a much better look with more editing techniques without any lagging.
2. What have you learnt from the ideas process, casting, script writing, filming and editing of your preliminary task?
Something that we have learnt from these tasks is that we should have really planned out every step before actually starting the film work. I think we should have finalised every idea and shot which would have most likely improved the quality of the preliminary video. I also believe the task was made much harder given the fact that we had no idea what music or setting we would be given. In addition, we were only given around 2 weeks to completely finish the product which will be considerably more for our final A2 piece. Although, I think working in a group was far easier which is definitely something I would like to carry through to our final piece - working with between 3 and 4 people.
3. How did the group dynamics work?
In terms of the groups roles: I was mainly in control of editing as well as helping with filming and making sure we hit certain deadlines. Drew was able to drive which was of a great help to us in getting to Norwich early in the morning. Drew was also helped with filming, thinking of different shots and how each scene would be composed. Finally Emma and Sophia were in charge of creating the album artwork as well as blog posts and arranging days for filming.
4. Audience feedback to preliminary task?
After asking a range of people about the preliminary we have the following responses:
Rachael Hustler- Its good but the music video does not reflect the rhythmical peaks in the song. However, lots of interesting editing techniques have been employed which make the video look professional and a little different.
Charlie Fraser: I really like the outcome of this preliminary. The use of pull focus definitely works and adds a definite focal value for the audience. In addition, the use of screen overlays and effects make the overall feel of the music video look energetic and happy. From this to the clothing where both the boy and girl wearing similar clothing really works and has been carefully thought about.
5. Looking at your finished video and its audience feedback, what changes will you be looking to make in the planning, filming and editing when it comes to your main task?
From our feedback I think we should definitely really think about the choice of music, the genre as well as tempo. We must think about this in conjunction with the scenes, thinking about the composition as a piece of art as well as a promotion of the music track.
